Another famous winter festival is on the other side of the world in China. Known as the City of Ice, Harbin is the capital city of Heilongjiang province, which borders Siberia. In the winter, it is bitterly cold, and temperatures there can drop to 30 degrees Celsius below zero. Even so, that works in the city's favor when it becomes the stage for the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival. The highlight of this annual event, which opens on January 5 and lasts a month, is the international ice sculpture competition. Using special saws, blocks of ice are cut from the Songhua River. Then, most of them are stacked carefully to form large buildings made entirely of ice.

另一個名聞遐邇的冬季慶典則是在地球另一端的中國。別名冰城的哈爾濱是與西伯利亞接壤的黑龍江省的省會。哈爾濱的冬季氣候極為寒冷，當地氣溫甚至可下滑至零下三十度。即便如此，當這座城市成為哈爾濱國際冰雪節的舉辦舞台時，這點可是非常有利。這個一年一度的活動自一月五日展開、為期一個月，而當中的精采高潮就是國際雪雕比賽。透過特製鋸刀的切割，一塊塊冰磚從松花江裡取了出來。接著，多數冰磚都被小心地堆疊起來，形成一棟棟全由冰製成的巨大建築物。
